Potential Areas for Seaweed Farming
Seaweed farming is an important industry in many countries, particularly in Asia where it has been practiced for thousands of years. Seaweed cultivation is a resource-neutral technology, that does not require land, freshwater, fertilizers, or pesticides. Seaweed farming is the cultivation of seaweed for commercial purposes such as food, medicine, cosmetics, and fertilizers. Seaweed cultivation can help improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients and pollutants from the surrounding environment. Seaweed cultivation is at its nascent stage in India, in order to develop the sector, the Department of Fisheries promotes seaweed cultivation in India. Hence, Multipurpose Seaweed Park, more than 1 lakh rafts and monolines, seaweed bank, pre-feasibility studies among others have been sanctioned by Department of Fisheries (GoI) under PMMSY.
